BCI Monthly Roundup — February 2026

29 January – 28 February 2026

Introduction

February 2026 was defined by industry and policy: China’s BCI sector was reported to be scaling quickly from research to commercialization on the back of state support, clinical trials, and investment, with NeuroXess moving toward human trials and framed as a competitor to Neuralink. In parallel, the Western BCI ecosystem saw a major partnership between Science Corp. and Neurosoft Bioelectronics to advance a shared BCI platform, and Apple was reported to be exploring thought-based device control. Regulatory and funding context came from an EU push for a neurotechnology “moonshot” and China’s fast-tracking of BCI industry development.

Research stayed focused on methods and translation: EEG-based BCI (single-trial P300, epilepsy classification, microstates), organotypic human brain slices as a testing platform for neuromodulation devices, and neural time-series methods (LFP amplitude coupling, burst timing across populations). Clinical and device-relevant work included a systematic review of VNS in stroke rehabilitation, a Journal of Neural Engineering review of DBS electrode–tissue response, and positive results for accelerated transcranial stimulation in depression. Computational and circuit-level themes—Arbor–TVB co-simulation for seizures, representational drift and Hebbian learning, hippocampal temporal coding, and brain-like RNN structure–function—rounded out the month’s science storylines.
